From Robert Galle
WhereIsIt is an application written for Windows operating systems, and designed to help you maintain and organize a catalog of your computer media collection, including CD-ROMs and DVDs, audio CDs, diskettes, removable drives, hard drives, network drives, remote file servers, or any other present or future storage media device Windows can access as a drive.
The primary goal for WhereIsIt is to provide access to the contents of cataloged disks, even when they are not available on the system, or even they are not your own. You can browse their contents, search for files or folders you need, use imported descriptions and thumbnails, organize data using categories and flags etc
WhereIsIt can be used to handle any kind of data, including downloaded programs, magazine CD-ROMs, music collections like MP3s or audio CDs, graphics collections, document backups, etc. WhereIsIt can handle lots of them, too, a couple hundreds or thousands disks in a catalog is nothing unusual, yet catalogs remain reasonably small, single-filed and easy to transfer or send to other users. You can also create more than one catalog, and at any time open and work with as many catalogs at once as needed.
WhereIsIt is easy to use for both beginners and advanced users. It features a familiar and well thought-out, Explorer-like user interface, combined with strong searching and reporting capabilities, massive archive file support (zip, arj, rar, ace, cab, lha/lzh, arc, tar, gzip, z, 7z, sfx, iso, bin, img, nrg, mdf, and others that can be presented in catalog as virtual folders), multi-language support, automated description and thumbnails importing through extendable plugins from more than 130 different sources, and much more.
Features and Capabilities
Suitable for beginners and advanced users
WhereIsIt was designed to be a very adjustable program with lots of options for power users, as well as quick and easy to use with predefined default settings and wizards for all those who don't want to get their hands dirty.
Well thought-out user interface with multi-language support
WhereIsIt's user interface is one of its most praised qualities. Easy to use, familiar Explorer-like user interface with clear overview of available functions, adjustable toolbar, columns to choose between, and extensive use of object menus (right mouse click) to let you quickly access command you need. Want to see item's description or assigned thumbnail image? Just leave mouse pointer on it for a moment, it will popup as a tool-tip.
Unicode Compliant Software
WhereIsIt supports Unicode encodings on all Unicode-capable Windows operating systems. Unicode allows you to represent and edit text in multiple languages and world writing systems side by side. WhereIsIt supports files with Unicode file names, allows Unicode in all user-editable data, and uses UTF-8 encoding for storing textual data in catalogs.
Extensive drive type support, for present
Improved scanning error tolerance in safe mode, the program can now handle and recover from several additional error conditions (typically crashed plugins) that would previously cause scanning to fail.
